Recent updates in the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) application process and eligibility criteria have brought significant changes aimed at simplifying procedures for applicants. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Government of India has relaxed the requirement for OCI cardholders to reissue their cards on acquiring a new passport until they reach 20 years of age and again after completing 50 years of age. This adjustment addresses the frequent changes in the applicant’s appearance, reducing the need for multiple reissues within a short period .
Additionally, the Ministry of Home Affairs has clarified that existing OCI cardholders aged between 21 and 50 years do not need to renew their OCI card each time they obtain a new passport. They are only required to upload a copy of their new passport and a recent photo online. This step is part of the government’s efforts to streamline the NRI Immigration process, making it less inconvinient for cardholders.
The new regulations also specify that children who acquired OCI by virtue of their parents must update their OCI card when they turn 20 years old and again after reaching 50 years. This change is due to biological changes in the applicant’s appearance, aiming to maintain updated and accurate records. Furthermore, OCI cardholders are required to report any change in their address or occupation within a specified period to the Indian authorities .
These updates in NRI Immigration regulations reflect the Indian government’s commitment to facilitating smoother and more efficient processes for OCI cardholders.
